CHILDLINE 1098

Childhood is also conceptualized as a process of development toward adulthood. It is a stage where they attain school or are supposed to be in school, enjoy playtime with their friends, grow strong and confident surrounded by love and encouragement from their family and community and cared by the adults. It is time for them to live without fear, protected from violence, abuse and exploitation.

Each and every child have the universal rights enshrined by their birthright to experience a profound childhood free from all misfortunes yet millions of children worldwide suffers exploitation and abuse, abandonment, trafficking, child labour, gender-based violence, bullying, child marriage, cyber-bullying, physically and emotionally violent child discipline, detention, poverty and violence irrespective of socio-economic backgrounds, across all ages, religions and cultures. And all this violence, exploitation and abuse are often meted out to them by someone known to the child, including parents, other family members, caretakers, teachers, employers, law enforcement authorities, state and non-state actors and even by other children. However only a fraction of such inhumanity against the children are reported and investigated and only few perpetrators are held accountable.

There is significant evidence that violence, exploitation and abuse can have an adverse effect on the child’s physical and mental health. It can implicate impairing their ability to learn and socialize and impacting their transition to adulthood.

Childhood must be preserved for all children and that they should have a profound right to live their childhood with absence from fear. Children have the right to survive, develop, be protected and participate in decisions that impact their lives. Upholding these values and its commitment to children in need of care and protection, CECS as the Nodal agency of CHILDLINE 1098 continues in its mission of being a beacon of hope for children in difficult circumstances. It has also grown from being just a reactive helpline service and has become more proactive in creating a protective and a safe haven for children in Nagaland. In this context, CHILDLINE Nagaland has undertaken several advocacy and visibility initiatives in the current year for making its service more accessible and roping in different stakeholders. Partner NGOs, Government agencies, community, tribal societies and many other likeminded societies and personalities has been taken into confidence to participate and advocate for the protection of the children and their rights to exist without any impairment to normal living.

The District CHILDLINE Advisory Board and State CHILDLINE Advisory Board headed by the Deputy Commissioner and Secretary Social Welfare Dept. Govt. of Nagaland respectively, has played a pivotal role in the successful implementation of several programmes and initiatives in the state level and District level in addressing the impending issue of child protection and safety.
